A fine quality George III Scottish sterling silver basket (for cake or fruit) by Alexander Gardner, hallmarked Edinburgh 1792. Neoclassical style, oval on conforming foot with reeded swing handle, pierced with floral and foliage motifs, with reeded border. Engraved with a family crest and coat of arms with motto "Reparabit cornua Phoebe" (the moon shall fill her horns again). 13.5" (34.3cm) long, 10.3" (26.2cm) wide, 29.7 troy oz (924g).
