Regency Silver Soup Tureen

A fine quality George III sterling silver soup tureen by William Bennett, hallmarked London 1808. Circular body on pedestal foot with domed lid with scrolling acanthus finial, two acanthus-capped side handles and ovolo border. The lid engraved with a coat of arms with motto "Per crucem ad stellas" (By the cross to heaven) on each side. The body engraved with a family crest* and monogram TL on each side. 15" (38.1cm) across, 123.4 troy oz (3838g).

*The arms as engraved upon this Tureen are those of Sir Thomas Legard, 7th Baronet of Ganton.
