A large and heavy Victorian sterling silver salver by Daniel & Charles Houle, hallmarked London 1859. Shaped circular form with applied scroll and shell border, the interior engraved with scrolls, acanthus and foliage, on three scroll and acanthus feet. Engraved in the centre with a family crest, coat of arms and motto "Provide". Inscribed "Presented to John Stewart Esq of Findynate, Surgeon R.N. by the Inhabitants of His Native District. in Token of Their Respect and Affection for Him as a Friend. And in Testimony of Their Gratitude for His Zealous Services Amongst Them as a Medical Practitioner for Upwards for Forty Years 1860." 17.1" (43.5cm) diameter, 59.8 troy oz (1860g).
