A massive and fine quality George IV sterling silver meat platter (or serving platter) by William Burwash, hallmarked London 1823. Shaped oval with border of gadroon, acanthus, flowers and lion masks, engraved with the marital coat of arms of Balfour and Fordyce*, and the motto "Virtus Ad Aethera Tendit" (Virtue reaches to heaven). 26" x 20" (66x 50.8cm), 165.9 troy oz (5160g).

* These arms undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of Lieutenant General Robert Balfour of Balbirnie (the 6th of Balbirnie) in the County of Fife, Scotland (born 3rd May 1772, died 31st October 1837) and Eglantine Katherine Fordyce (died 9th January 1852). Robert was the eldest son of John Balfour of Balbirnie (the 5th of
Balbirnie).
